I've been a writer since kindergarten, but only a published author since 2017. Well, I've been busy! Raising five fantastic children, marrying them off one by one, then welcoming grandchildren into the family - seven to date so far. In between mothering, smothering and impersonating an administrative assistant for Mr. Black's business, writing fiction took a backseat. Then one day my son-in-law asked if he could use our 100-year-old Victorian house to make a short film for a contest he was entering for Halloween. The main character had a phobia of doors. The days following the filming, my protagonist, Agnes, started coming to life in my mind, mingled with my own personal phobias and some rather disturbing supernatural shenanigans going on in our house. Thus, The Haunting of Agnes Hayes was born, and I wrote the entire novel in about six months. Arseways came about from a dream I had several years ago. A terribly sad dream about Mr. Black dying and I was surrounded by my adult children. As we gathered around his lifeless body laid out on the dinner table, the strangest thing happened, and my dream turned from sad to silly to seriously messed up. Thus, the dark comedy of Arseways joined its psychological thriller sister, Agnes, on the bookshelf three years later. My Friend the Scarecrow has just been published and is very personal and close to my heart. It's a novella about a family dealing with a loved one who has dementia. I think everyone has been or will be touched by this incurable disease. And who doesn't get freaked out by talking Scarecrows? I don't feel like a dark, crazy person, but for some reason, that's what comes out when I go to my invisible world of people I want to flesh out on the written page. So, what's in the queue? Ghost stories inspired by true events in a little lighthouse north of me called Terrible Tilly.
I'll let you in on a little secret. But you have to promise not to tell a soul. I'm a recovering agoraphobe. You've seen them, right? Oh, well, you probably haven't. We prefer to stay in our houses. My family is applauding my efforts though. I've recently moved up to socially awkward with the occasional public breakdown and hope to reach complete wallflower by the time I'm 60. Do you struggle with phobias, fears or unacceptable quirks? I'd love to hear from you. Please don't knock on my door though. I probably won't answer.
If you've read any of my books, you know I have a penchant for ghosts, or souls from purgatory as we Catholics like to call them. I've had my own supernatural experiences, some of which are in The Haunting of Agnes Hayes. I'd love to hear your stories of seeing loved ones who have passed or why you think you live in a haunted house. A non-fiction book about real life people meeting real dead people is in the works. Who knows? Your story could be in it!
